Antidotes, Anecdotes, and Heirlooms

Those three words are the essence of this blog. What does that actually look like when it comes to the content? Let's dig in.

An antidote is a remedy or other agent used to neutralize or counteract the effects of a poison.

I found this word to be a powerful and effective word to convey a lot of what this blog's focus entails.

I see the "poison" daily when working with my nutrition clients. The poison of false information shared when it comes to so many topics in the nutrition world. I know the same can be true in every facet of health and wellness.

This blog seeks to be a remedy to counteract the loud narrative that has shaped our view of food, what our bodies ought to look like, how our bodies work, what is "helping" or "hurting" our bodies, the list goes on.

And like I said, the same can be said for other areas of our health. The poison can come from the people around us or us to them, how we handle or mishandle our finances, the self-doubt and insecurities we tell ourselves and ultimately shape our actions, the fear and shame messaging about the choices we make and their impact on us and those we love. We're here to remedy to this. To share a different side of the story, to help reframe our mindset to love ourselves into a decision that brings health, grace, and peace of mind.

Speaking of a different side of the story, anecdotes deliver a short narrative of an interesting, amusing, or biographical incident. I believe we are stronger and more capable to overcome our own health struggles when we hear the personal experiences of others.

I know my thinking and worldview has been dramatically changed for good (yes, huge Wicked fan) by hearing other's stories. As a species we are so diverse in so many ways and it's breathtaking. It has given rise in me to question how I've always thought about a certain thing. More often than not there are many different ways to view something and not just one concrete way of thinking. Whether it's a story of relational reconciliation, how eating a certain food changed someone's health, or what lead someone to make a certain health decision, stories bring us all back to our common humanity; our common experiences with a massive web of possibilities to the outcomes based on so many factors. It humbles me in the best way possible.

Lastly heirlooms. These are something of special value handed down from one generation to another.

Each post will contain a recipe and some recommendations. The recipe won't necessarily be food and drink specific. It could be for home or personal care product or maybe a recipe for a healthy marriage.

Over the last few years, I've really fell in love with cooking from scratch. Even one Christmas recently that was on my Christmas list - a few of my favorite recipes my grandparents always make. While I've enjoyed the time in the kitchen, I know not everyone does and that's absolutely ok as well! I have no doubt there will be some "quick" recipes shared as well.

Who we are today is a culmination of what has been passed down or not passed down over the years. There are some skills we have "lost" that are making a resurgence once again. Whether it's food recipes, skills, knowledge, or values, these all can be shared and passed down for the next generation to choose to continue the legacy or not.

Though I cannot speak for all Millennials, there are many in my generation that are hungry for the wisdom, knowledge, and mentorship of older generations and ready to help guide those who come after us.

This is a big part of my passion for nutrition. I hunger for everyone to have a healthy relationship with food. I know it wasn't until my late 20's that I learned what I believe we should be taught all growing-up about how all food can serve us, what macronutrients are, that you don't have to "work off" the food you eat, what food and nutrients do for our bodies, why sleep is so crucial for nutrition and my rant could go on and on but that's what the articles to come are for ;)

I hope each post feels like a group of friends getting together to chat on "April 25th because it's not too hot or too cold, and all you need is a light jacket". (If you know what movie that's from drop it in the comment section!)

Blessings,

Kels
